The private rocket company SpaceX recently fired employees who helped write and distribute an open letter that heavily criticized the company’s chief executive Elon Musk.
On Wednesday some SpaceX employees began distributing the letter which criticized Musk’s presence on Twitter. The social media platform that Elon Musk is currently closing a $44 billion deal on.
Within a day SpaceX had already fired some of the open letter’s organizers and contributors according to three employees at the company as well as an email from SpaceX’s president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shortwell.
Shortwell’s email about the situation stated, “The letter, solicitations and general process made employees feel uncomfortable, intimidated and bullied, and/or angry because the letter pressured them to sign onto something that did not reflect their views.” Ms. Shotwell continued, “We have too much critical work to accomplish and no need for this kind of overreaching activism.”
It is currently unclear how many employees have been fired in response to the letter. Spokesman for SpaceX, James Gleeson, did not immediately comment on the situation.
The New York Times reported that “The open letter followed recently publicized accusations of sexual misconduct against Mr. Musk amid his contentious acquisition of Twitter. On Thursday, he addressed Twitter employees for the first time since his takeover offer via a video call to answer their questions.”
The open letter asked SpaceX leader’s to “publicly address and condemn Elon’s harmful Twitter behavior” and “define and uniformly respond to all forms of unacceptable behavior.”
In Ms. Shortwell’s email response to the situation she said, “Blanketing thousands of people across the company with repeated unsolicited emails and asking them to sign letters and fill out unsponsored surveys during the work day is not acceptable.” She continued “Please stay focused on the SpaceX mission, and use your time to do your best work… This is how we will get to Mars.”
SpaceX’s firing of “woke” employees shows that the company is no longer taking things of this nature lightly and it is a very important action given Musk may soon become the owner of Twitter.
