Ron DeSantis Calls for Child Protective Statues to Stop Kids From Going to Drag Shows; to Investigate on Parents Who Take Kids to Drag Shows

On Wednesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was asked about proposed legislation by Florida state representatives that would punish parents for taking their kids to these shows. DeSantis said in response “We have child protective statutes on the books. We have laws against child endangerment.”

“It used to be kids would be off-limits. Used to be everybody agreed with that,” DeSantis continued. “Now it just seems like there’s a concerted effort to be exposing kids more and more to things that are not age appropriate.”

The Governor concluded his statements with a message, “That is totally inappropriate. That is not something children should be exposed to,”

The debate over whether minors should be allowed to watch drag performances began Saturday after videos showing young children attending a Dallas drag show, and tipping performers with cash, emerged on social media.

The event, “Drag the Kids to Pride Drag Show” — which was held at the gay bar Mr. Misster — was advertised as a “family friendly spin off” of the bar’s “Champagne Drag Brunch” show.

Florida congressman Anthony Sabatini called for an ’emergency’ session of the Florida Legislature that would discuss charging parents with a felony if a child is brought to a drag show in the state. Sabtini has made many comments on his proposal on twitter and to reporters, most common of which is “What happened in Texas was criminal. When will the sexualization of children stop?”

Prominent responses to the video include Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene saying “There should be no federal funding for any school that intentionally confuses children about gender/sexuality.” and Fox News host Tucker Carlson also called the footage “grotesque” and accused parents and performers of “sexualizing children.”

Nancy Pelosi chimed in with extremely poor timing this weekend as she appeared on Ru Paul’s Drag Race, saying it was an ‘honor’. Pelosi continued to back drags prominence saying, “Your freedom of expression of yourselves in drag is what America is all about,” the House speaker added. “I say that all the time to my friends in drag.”

Rep Lauren Boebert, meanwhile, said: ‘Take your children to CHURCH, not drag bars.’

The controversial event has sparked newfound debate across the country about issues surrounding gender identity and children.
