Democrat West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin just delivered a big loss to the Democrat party after announcing that he will not support their budget reconciliation package unless provisions of climate change and higher taxes are dropped out of the bill.
Manchin has expressed support for some portions of the bill, specifically provisions for lowering prescription drugs and a two-year extension for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). But is refusing to support the before-mentioned climate change and tax hike proposals.
Manchin’s decision effectively blocks the Democrats from passing their climate change agenda. According to The Hill, Manchin told Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer that he would support a “narrow budget reconciliation package before Labor Day if it does not include new spending to fight climate change or taxes on wealthy individuals or corporations.”

As November midterms are right around the corner, Democrats are rushing to pass this bill before September so that the ACA can permit a major hike in insurance premiums. Manchin spokesperson Sam Runyon told NBC News that more government spending in the age of rising inflation isn’t the answer.
“Political headlines are of no value to the millions of Americans struggling to afford groceries and gas as inflation soars to 9.1 percent,” Runyon said, “Senator Manchin believes it’s time for leaders to put political agendas aside, reevaluate and adjust to the economic realities the country faces to avoid taking steps that add fuel to the inflation fire,” Runyon added.
Manchin’s centrist views and decisions like these are a subject of major disapproval and criticism amongst the leftist members of the party, which seems to be in the majority right now. The party’s New Mexico Senator wrote on Twitter, “We have an opportunity to address the climate crisis right now. Senator Manchin’s refusal to act is infuriating. It makes me question why he’s Chair of ENR,” referring to the Senate Committee of Energy and Natural Resources.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in a very predictable move, reflected Heinrich’s views and responded: “Courage. Thank you for saying this Sen.@MartinHeinrich.”

Manchin, along with all Senate Republicans is blocking this spending bill from getting to Joe Biden’s desk until the climate change and socialist tax hike provisions are removed. Unfortunately, no other Democrat is backing Manchin on this as of publishing this article. None the less, the bill is effectively blocked in the Senate.
