President Biden was speaking with donors at a fundraising event about his opinion that armed school staff is a severely misguided idea. He pointed to the rigor of military training as evidence that it is not easy to “blow someone’s brains out.”
Biden told the audience that while he owns two shotguns, he does not believe the Second Amendment covers all forms of firearms.
“The idea we’re going to provide – the way to deal with gun safety is to provide teachers with guns in classrooms?” Biden said at the event. “There’s a reason why the military takes so long to train somebody. It’s not easy to pick up a rifle or a gun and blow somebody’s brains out.”
In 2015, when he was vice president, Biden urged Americans who want to protect their homes to buy a shotgun, not an AR-15. “You don’t need an AR-15. It’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use and in fact, you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself,” Biden said at the time.
In response to the Uvalde shooting last week, Biden called for a reinstatement of the federal assault weapons ban that was passed in 1994 and expired in 2004.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday, “I know there’s been conversation about hardening schools, that is not something he believes in. He believes that we should be able to give teachers the resources to be able to do their job.”
Biden appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, and was grilled on future gun legislation. In response to Kimmel demanding an executive order, and referencing Donald Trump’s use of that measure Biden said;
“Well, I have issued executive orders within the power of the presidency” to address gun violence, “but what I don’t want to do — and I’m not being facetious — I don’t want to emulate Trump’s abuse of the Constitution and constitutional authority,” Biden said. “I often get asked, ‘Look, the Republicans don’t play it square, why do you play it square?’ Well, guess what? If we do the same thing they do, our democracy will literally be in jeopardy.”
